US says it’s ‘up to Hamas’ to respond to ‘serious proposal’ on hostages

The question of hostage release is now up to Hamas, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan says.

He said the group “must come forward and respond” to a proposal on negotiations mediated by the US, Qatar and Egypt aimed.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, he said the US will “continue to press” Qatar and Egypt for a positive response.

The proposal aims to free more than 100 people taken in the October 7 Hamas attacks in return for a ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Mr Sullivan added there is no clear idea how many of the hostages remain alive.
