US destroys Houthi air defence and drone systems
The US military has said it destroyed air defence and drone systems used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea area.
No injuries or damage was reported to commercial, US or coalition ships during the operation.
The US Central Command said its forces destroyed an air defence system with two missiles ready to launch, a ground control station in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and one unmanned aerial system launched by the Houthis from Yemen over the Red Sea.
The Houthis, who are aligned with Iran, said on Sunday they had launched drones and rockets at British, US and Israeli ships.
The group has repeatedly targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea, which they say is in response to Israel’s invasion of Gaza.
The attacks have disrupted shipping through the Suez Canal and forced companies to re-route to longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa.
