US authorities: Pakistan must prove it is fighting terrorism
The United States has stepped up pressure on Pakistan to prosecute militants in its jails as Islamabad faces a crucial hearing to convince world powers it is serious about fighting terror.
Alice Wells, the top State Department official for South Asia, welcomed Pakistan’s recent arrest of four leaders of the Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), but called on the men to stand trial, along with the group’s leader, Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the terror attacks on Mumbai that left 166 people dead in 2008.
