Turkish authorities have frozen the assets of a man with connections to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – Khorasan, the extremist group’s affiliate in Afghanistan.

A presidential decision issued on March 22 in the Official Gazette said İsmatullah Khalozai’s assets were frozen in accordance with a United Nations Security Council decision for financially mediating and carrying out human trafficking activities for the group.

Khalozai’s name was included in a list of sanctioned people by the US Treasury in November 2021.

ISIS-K, named after an old term for the region, first appeared in eastern Afghanistan in late 2014 and rapidly established a presence and reputation for extreme brutality.

The group says the Taliban’s interpretation of the Islamic sharia law is not “harsh” enough and has targeted several groups in Afghanistan, including politicians, ministries, theTaliban and religious minorities, as well as international aid organizations.
