Tunisian court sentences Sudanese national to nearly 11 years for planning terrorist attack

A Tunisian court on Thursday sentenced a Sudanese national to nearly 11 years in prison on charges of planning a terrorist attack in the country, private radio station Mosaique FM reported.

Prosecutors identified the man as a former soldier in the Sudanese army who later deserted the army and joined a terrorist group in Libya before illegally entering Tunisia. He was arrested in Zarzis, a town in southeastern Tunisia, by a counter-terrorism unit.

The court handed down a sentence of 10 years and 9 months for the man, Mosaique FM reported. Authorities did not provide further details of the suspect’s identity.

Authorities confiscated the suspect’s phone, which reportedly contained photos showing him carrying firearms, ammunition, and a grenade, Mosaique FM reported. Further details about the alleged plot or the terrorist organization were not disclosed.
