Trump signs order to combat antisemitism on campuses, vows action against ‘Hamas sympathizers’
President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday seeking to fight antisemitism on college campuses and vowing action against “Hamas sympathizers” among student populations.
Antisemitism has spiked on campuses after Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, and pro-Palestinian protests roiled campuses last spring, with more than 2,000 arrests at universities across the country.
Trump is seeking to direct federal resources toward combating antisemitism on campuses and calling for all federal executive agencies to report criminal and civil actions that can be used to fight antisemitism to the White House within 60 days.
The president also said the Department of Justice will “quell pro-Hamas vandalism and intimidation” and “investigate and punish anti-Jewish racism in leftist, anti-American colleges and universities.”
Trump also wants to see “resident aliens” who have violated the law deported.
“To all the resident aliens who joined in the pro-jihadist protests, we put you on notice: come 2025, we will find you, and we will deport you. I will also quickly cancel the student visas of all Hamas sympathizers on college campuses, which have been infested with radicalism like never before,” Trump said in the order.
Universities have put into place stronger measures regarding how students are allowed to protest since the uproar, which caused some schools to cancel in-person classes and commencements.
This executive order comes among a flurry of other actions related to education the president took Wednesday, issuing two other orders that supported school choice programs and defunded schools teaching critical race theory or gender issues.
