Trailer found packed with explosives ready for ‘antisemitic attack’ in Australia: ‘Potential mass casualty event’
A trailer packed with explosives and a list of apparent Jewish targets was found hidden in an Australian suburb last week, police revealed Wednesday — calling it a thwarted antisemitic terrorism attack.
The bomb-laden trailer contained enough explosives to create a 130-foot blast zone when it was discovered on Jan. 19 on a property in Dural, 22 miles northwest of Sydney, cops said.
A list of locations, including Jewish synagogues, was also found stashed in the vehicle, according to investigators.
“This is the discovery of a potential mass casualty event,” New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said Wednesday. “There is only one way of calling it out, and that is terrorism.”
Police refused to publicly disclose the targets on the list but said the Jewish community had been made aware of the threats.
“That caravan [trailer] contained an amount of explosives and some indication that those explosives might be used in some form of antisemitic attack,” NSW state Deputy Police Commissioner David Hudson said.
“The use of explosives … have the potential to cause a great deal of damage.”
Authorities also refused to say how many people had been arrested or what charges they faced — with Hudson only able to say they had “mitigated the risk as much as possible.”
“I’m not saying it’s been eliminated. I’m saying it’s been mitigated,” the deputy commissioner said.
“That’s one of the reasons we’re talking today, for members of the public to be vigilant in relation to what they see and what they hear in relation to antisemitism in our community,” he said.
The alarming find appeared to be powergel — an emulsion-based explosive — potentially taken from a mining site.
Footage taken by local outlet 7News showed several long trailers located on the sprawling property where the explosives were found.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on X that “hate and extremism have no place in Australian society.”
Australia has suffered a spate of antisemitic incidents in recent months — including attacks on synagogues, buildings and cars.
People were forced to flee a synagogue in Melbourne last month after it was set on fire. A child care site in Sydney was also set alight and hit with antisemitic graffiti earlier this month.
