Ties between Syria’s new gov’t, Hamas witnessing rapprochement
Relations between the new Syrian government and Hamas have witnessed “increased” rapprochement in the past weeks, following the fall of the regime of Bashar Al-Assad.
Observers attributed the high level coordination and contacts to prominent Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal’s public support of and backing of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
Media reports said Meshaal spoke on the phone with the new Syrian leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, who welcomed Meshaal’s recent statements regarding the regime’s fall and the Syrian revolution’s victory.
Two weeks ago, Meshaal congratulated the “brotherly Syrian people” on behalf of the “Palestinian people” on “the success of their revolution against tyranny and oppression.”
According to reports, the ongoing political coordination between the new Syrian government and Hamas may lead to the movement and Islamic Jihad being excluded from the Syrian authorities’ decision to close all offices of Palestinian factions and organisations in Damascus.
