The Governor of Diyala revealed new information on Islamic State killing of police officer
Diyala Governor Muthana al-Tamimi revealed on Tuesday (January 4) new details related to the killing of passport officer Colonel Yasser al-Jourani by Islamic State (ISIS) militants last month.
Tamimi said in an interview on Tuesday that Jourani, the day he was killed, had been hunting with friends in an uninhabited area that was not controlled by security forces, which gave ISIS terrorists the opportunity to capture him and show the brutality of the group.
The governor said the person who carried out the killing of Jourani was a former security officer from Jalawla sub-district, the location where Jourani was kidnapped, and was expelled from security forces due to his affiliation with ISIS after 2014.
“According to the intelligence agency, we will have the final results within days,” Tamimi added.
“According to my information, Jourani was a staunch fighter against ISIS and his record was full of that,” the governor said. “Therefore, they took this measure against him, beheading him, in revenge for his heroism against terrorism.”
Tamimi stated most of the dozens of ISIS members are from areas neighboring Lake Hamrin and the Hamrin Mountains. “We have all the data related to the terrorists and some of those who were released under political pressure under the pretext of gathering secret information from them later returned to terrorist activities,” the governor stated.
Officer Jourani was kidnapped along with three others on December 13. Security forces in Diyala Operations Command later launched a search operation for four people kidnapped by ISIS terrorist gangs in the Lake Hamrin area in Saadiya.
