ISIS terrorists removed only from populated areas
A Kurdish Peshmerga commander has warned of Islamic State (IS) insurgency activities, saying that the group has only been eliminated from populated areas while it is still active in remote areas.
The Iraqi government declared full victory over IS late in 2017 after recapturing its entire territories from the extremist group. The last pocket held by IS in Syria was liberated only last week after months of fierce clashes in the region.
However, the jihadists continue targeting the Iraqi forces and Syrian Kurdish fighters in hit-and-run attacks.
Jafaar Sheikh Mustafa, a commander of the Peshmerga forces, told BasNews on Wednesday that the group is not been defeated yet and that the insurgents are still active in remote areas across Iraq.
He noted that the IS militants often also target the Peshmerga forces, but their attacks are strongly defeated.
“Peshmerga forces remain on alert to respond and thwart any IS activities in the areas under their control,” Mustafa added.
