The Islamic State (IS) militants overnight on Monday carried out fierce attacks against the Iraqi forces and Iranian-backed militia of Hashd al-Shaabi separately in southern and southwestern parts of Kirkuk province.
Security sources said that at around 21:00 local time (+3 GMT), the Shi’ite militia’s positions near Albu Mohammed village of Daquq district came under heavy attacks by IS which resulted in fierce fire exchange between the sides.
Locals reported huge booming sounds of explosions and possibly heavy arms used in the clash.
No casualties were reported in the first attack.
Elsewhere in Najatiya village of Hawija district (some 55 kilometres southwest of Kirkuk), the IS jihadists assaulted the Iraqi federal police forces and Hashd al-Shaabi militiamen, killing at least two pro-government paramilitary fighters and wounding one policeman.
