Islamic State terrorist group is recruiting New Zealand teens
As social media reach grows, so too do the areas that groups like Islamic State (IS) can influence.
Nineteen-year-old Jordayne Evan-Thomas Madams was recently arrested on suspicion of possessing terrorist propaganda.
He’s part of a small group of Kiwis charged with the crime, but the list could grow.
Three’s The Project spoke to Professor Greg Barton, counter terrorism expert from Deakin University. He says we shouldn’t be concerned… yet.
“Recruitment is all about social networks and friendship circles, so it could happen in New Zealand and it hasn’t happened on a large scale as far as we know at the moment,” he said.
“Social media plays a role, but so far New Zealand has been blessedly out of the loop on this.”
