ISIS Has A New Face, Terrorist Group Names New Chief
Islamic State Terror group, commonly known as ISIS has announced its new leader following the death of Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi. Based on an official announcement made by the ISIS spokesperson, the new leader is Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.
The terrorist group confirmed the death of its former chief on Thursday, August 3, 2023 through an update shared on its Telegram channel.
The confirmation of Abu Hussein’s death comes three months after Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan claimed that Turkish intelligence forces had killed the ISIS chief in Syria.
However, the ISIS spokesperson stated that its leader had been killed in “direct clashes” with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group in Idlib province in rebel-held northwestern Syria. The statement added that the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group had killed its leader and then handed over his body to Turkey.
While announcing its new face, the Islamic state has shared no other details about the Chief apart from his name. Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi is the fifth leader of the group since its formation. ISIS was formed in 2013 from the remnants of the Al Qaeda terror group in Iraq.
Former chief of ISIS, Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi is the fourth leader to have been killed since the inception of the group. In November 2022, the third leader of the group – Abu Hasan had been killed.
Abu Hasan’s predecessor, Abi Ibrahim al-Qurashi was killed in February 2022 during a raid conducted by United States in the Idlib province. ISIS’ first leader – Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in October 2019, also in Idlib.
