Islamic State terrorist group suspect detained and charged in Germany
German prosecutors say they’ve charged a 32-year-old Syrian man with membership in a terrorist organization for alleged involvement with the extremist Islamic State group.
Prosecutors said in a statement Friday that Mohamed A. G., whose last name wasn’t given in line with privacy laws, was arrested Thursday in the western city of Kassel.
He’s accused of joining IS in Syria in August 2013 and fighting in several battles through mid-2015, commanding a unit of fighters.
It was not clear when he entered Germany nor how he was identified by authorities as a suspect. Prosecutors were not available for questions.
Hundreds of thousands of Syrians entered Germany in 2015-16 as asylum-seekers and in several other cases, migrants have identified IS suspects in their midst to authorities.
