Representatives of the council of the Kunar province believe that the Taliban, who are disappointed in the decision of the leadership, can also join the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba. In addition, the Taliban, who abandoned ties with al-Qaeda, are likely to renew them.

Representatives of the Taliban reacted sharply to these assumptions, perceiving them as an attempt to defame themselves. They published a special statement in which they expressed their intention to eradicate ISIS in Afghanistan. This statement was praised by US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad.

“I welcome the Taliban’s statement condemning the Islamic State and expressing its commitment to stop any Islamic State’s attempts to“ recruit, raise funds and train militants “in Afghanistan,” the special representative said. “The statement by the Taliban on the Islamic State and their recent operations against terrorists in Kunar are positive steps.”

Khalilzad also expressed concern about the continuation of the Taliban attacks against the Afghan security forces and said that the US side is seeking to reduce violence.
