Syrian officer killed by Islamic State terrorists at checkpoint near 55-kilometer zone in Syrian desert

SOHR activists have documented the death of an officer and injury of another regime member in an armed attack by unidentified gunmen believed to be ISIS members, targeting a military vehicle near the checkpoint of Al-Shahmy junction near the 55-kilometer zone in furthest area of the Syrian desert eastern of Homs.

On May 6, reliable sources informed SOHR that ISIS cells unleashed an attack on a military position nearby the 55-kilometre zone in the Syrian desert, near the border with Jordan and Iraq, where regime forces were establishing ambushes targeting ISIS cells in that area. According to SOHR sources, the attack left eight people dead.

According to SOHR statistics, the number of fatalities in military operations in the Syrian desert since early 2022 has increased to 200; and they are as follows:

• 104 ISIS members were killed in Russian airstrikes on ISIS hideouts in the deserts of Homs, Al-Suwaidaa, Hama, Al-Raqqah, Deir Ezzor, and Aleppo.

• 96 soldiers of regime forces and their proxy militias were killed in 36 operations by ISIS members, including ambushes, armed attacks, and explosions, in western Euphrates and the deserts of Deir Ezzor, Al-Raqqah, Homs, Al-Suwaidaa, Hama and Aleppo.
