More suspected ISIS terrorist group members detained in northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi
Security forces in the northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi have expanded their investigation, arresting more people suspected of having ties to the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group, a judiciary official announced.
Speaking to Tasnim News Agency on Sunday, deputy prosecutor general of Mashhad, Hassan Heydari, said the number of suspected IS members arrested in the province over the past days has risen to 27.
“Intelligence forces expanded their investigation in the cities of Khorasan Razavi Province hunting for clues and have detained more suspects in recent days,” he added.
On Thursday, Heydari had announced the arrest of 21 IS terrorists in Mashhad. He had noted that the detainees, including Iranian and Afghan nationals, had planned to carry out different operations in Iran, including suicide attacks.
There has been a surge in the number of counterterrorism operations launched by Iranian security forces in recent weeks.
The Intelligence Ministry has arrested dozens of militants affiliated with IS across Iran following the June 7 attacks in Tehran that were claimed by the terrorist group.
