Suspected acid attack terror as people sprayed in face with substance

Victims of a suspected acid attack were seen using milk to try to wash away the unknown substance on a busy Cardiff street on Sunday.

Five people were taken to hospital after being they were sprayed with a “noxious substance” in broad daylight on City Road.

Milk was poured onto the faces, eyes, and bodies of the victims as empty bottles were seen scattered on the pavements outside a local shop called Afro Barber Shop.

Police say that tests are being carried out to determine the substance, but it is likely to be either bleach or peroxide.

Eyewitnesses reported a large emergency service presence, which included officers from South Wales Police and Welsh Ambulance crews.

Speaking to WalesOnline, one witness said: “When I went into Tesco a bloke came storming towards me topless covered in milk, saying he’d had acid thrown on him, using the milk to neutralise the acid.

“All the staff in Tesco were clearing up the milk. It was bonkers.”

Another witness said “It was very bad, they couldn’t breathe properly. They’d taken their T-shirts off and were putting the milk and everything – for relief from whatever it was, the acid or spray.

“Police were looking for the jar or maybe can or maybe a spray – I don’t know if they found something or not.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said that the five victims were released from the hospital on the same day.

No arrests have been made but officers believe the people involved are known to each other, and It is not thought to have been a random attack.

South Wales Police confirmed officers were called to reports of an assault at around 2.45pm on Sunday.

The Welsh Ambulance Service also said they took two people to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, and that their hazardous area response team had attended the incident.
