Somali military court sentences woman for Al-Shabab activities

Somalia’s military court on Sunday sentenced a young woman to eight years in prison for Al-Shabaab activities.

“Abdi was found guilty of aiding the terrorists by acting as a keeper of weapons and ammunition, as well as gathering information on officials working for the government and its institutions,” said Colonel Hassan Ali Nur Shute, the chief judge of the lower military court.

Hawa Osman Abdi, was accused of aiding the extremist group Al-Shabaab in various ways, including playing a role in intelligence gathering.

During the trial, prosecutors insisted that Abdi, said to be in her early 20s, joined the radical group after absorbing extremist ideology through the group’s online information and propaganda outlet.

Alongside Abdi, two male defendants, named as Awil Adan Jama and Hassan Ali Hassan, were convicted of belonging to and working for the Al-Qaeda-linked group.

Jama was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment, while Hassan was sentenced to one year under police surveillance.
