Situation escalates as Islamic State detainees continue to riot in Hasakah
The situation at the prison of Ghweran in the Kurdish city of Hassakah, northeast Syria, has further deteriorated as thousands of Islamic State (IS) detainees continue a second insurrection, a source familiar with the issue told BasNews on Tuesday.
Earlier this week reports indicated a riot at the prison by IS jihadists. However, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is in charge of the region and the prison, said later that the situation was taken under control.
The source told BasNews that IS detainees once again rioted on Tuesday and they are now in control of almost the entire sections inside the prison.
He added that the jihadists have broken doors and there was a violent clash after the prison guards attempted to put down the riot, with several injured on both sides.
BasNews has learned that reinforcement has been deployed to the neighborhood with a tight cordon around the prison.
The prison holds more than 3,000 members of IS. It is one of the largest prisons of its kind under the control of the SDF.
