Russian court sentences Tajik citizen to 10 years for attempt to join ISIS terrorist group
The North Caucasus District Military Court has sentenced Abdurakhim Mukhidinov, a Tajik national living in Rostov-on-Don, to 10 years in prison for an attempt to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization prohibited in Russia, the court’s spokesperson Alena Katkalo has told RAPSI.
The court found that in June 2017, the defendant began to prepare for joining a cell of ISIS based in Afghanistan. He initiated contact with an ISIS recruiter via the Internet, discussed his route, bought a camouflage uniform and an air ticket. He was arrested in a Russian airport.
Moreover, in May 2017, Mukhidinov induced one person to join ISIS, the court’s spokesperson said.
The Islamic State, an organization which is prohibited in Russia, is currently one of the major threats to global security. Over three years, these terrorists have managed to seize large areas of Iraq and Syria. Currently, various forces combat the organization in both countries with battle for Iraqi Mosul as one of the most crucial directions.
