Senior Islamic State group member captured near Kirkuk
A senior member of the Islamic State (IS) has been captured near the disputed Kurdish province of Kirkuk.
The senior militant, said to be a former “Emir” of the insurgent group in the Iraqi city of Mosul, was arrested on Wednesday at a security checkpoint on a highway between Kirkuk and Sulaimaniya provinces, BasNews reporter in the area said.
His identity was not revealed in the report.
Although Iraq declared full victory over the Islamic State in 2017, the jihadist group has reportedly regrouped itself in most liberated areas in the country.
