More than 1000 ISIS widows are seeking to return to Russia
More than 1000 Russian women, who had been married to Islamic State (IS) militants, are now requesting repatriation to their home country, an official said.
After they “sustained an unimaginable violence”, the women have now lost their husbands who fought alongside the IS insurgents, said Tatyana Moskalkova, Russia’s human rights commissioner, as reported by Iraqi News.
Citing their participation in terrorist activities, Moskalkova explained that the repatriation of the IS widows could threaten the safety of people in Russia, therefore returning them to the home country is still a difficult process.
Iraq holds thousands of IS widows and children with foreign nationality. They have been captured during the war against the jihadist group across the country between 2014 and 2018.
