Security Alert For Champions Trophy: Terror Plot Targets Foreign Tourists in Pakistan
Pakistan ‘s Intelligence Bureau on Monday warned the country’s security forces about potential plots by several terrorist groups targeting foreign tourists attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as per Republic’s sources.
The sources revealed that the alert has been issued against several terror groups, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and other Balochistan-based outfits.
Sources suggest that the Islamic State–Khorasan Province (ISKP) intends to rent properties around the city that lack CCTV surveillance and other security measures. The group plans to transport kidnapped victims between these locations during the night to avoid detection.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency (GDI) has also issued a warning regarding potential ISKP attacks on key locations and is stepping up efforts to locate missing operatives connected to the group.
Pakistan on High Alert
Amid reports of potential threats, Pakistan’s security forces have implemented heightened security, including the deployment of rangers and local police, to protect players and their staff during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which Pakistan is hosting.
This security alert represents a significant setback for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as it works to restore cricket in the country. After the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team, international cricket was suspended in Pakistan for over a decade. However, Pakistan has recently hosted several major international teams.
The ICC Champions Trophy marks the first ICC tournament in Pakistan in 26 years, and the security threat is putting its successful hosting at risk.
India had previously raised security concerns regarding Pakistan and decided against touring the country, prompting the PCB to create a hybrid model, with India’s matches being scheduled in Dubai. In light of intelligence reports, Pakistan has increased security nationwide.
On Sunday, India defeated Pakistan by 6 wickets in their Group Stage match at the Dubai International Stadium, maintaining their dominance in the tournament and eliminating Pakistan from contention for the Champions Trophy.
IND vs PAK ICC CT 2025: Here’s What Happened
After winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bat first against India in Dubai, aiming to secure an early advantage. However, this decision played into India’s hands and resulted in a disappointing performance for Pakistan. Key players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan once again failed to deliver results, with Shaud Shakeel’s 62 off 76 balls being the highlight as Pakistan managed to set a total of 241 runs.
In response, India embarked on their chase with relative ease, a result that was anticipated. Virat Kohli , the star cricketer scored 100 runs from 111 balls with a strike rate of 90.09, leading the team to victory. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma started aggressively, leaving Pakistan’s bowlers—Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and Shaheen Afridi—struggling to find answers. Shubman Gill also provided stability as he anchored the innings.
India has now secured a spot in the Champions Trophy semi-finals, while Pakistan’s campaign is effectively over, leaving them to depend on other teams like New Zealand and Bangladesh for a chance to progress to the knockout stages.
