Le Ramier, a popular restaurant in Moresnet-Chapelle, Plombières, has been shut and emergency response crews are currently on the scene.
Mayor of Plombières Thierry Wimmer confirmed there were “several” fatalities, while local news outlets reported three people had died – two women, reportedly mother and daughter, and the male knifeman.
Mayor Wimmer said the stabbings were being treated as domestic-related and there is no link to terrorism.
Witnesses told the Belga news agency that the suspect is believed to be an ex-boyfriend of one of the victims.
Helicopters, ambulances and police vehicles flocked to Moresnet-Chapelle at 5pm this afternoon, according to local media.
The street, Rue de la Clinique, remains cordoned off.
At least one victim was flown to hospital in a medical helicopter.
According to information from the scene, but not confirmed by the prosecutor’s office, a man armed with a knife entered a restaurant and began attacking victims.
“Unfortunately, a tragedy occurred on August 22 in Moresnet-Chappelle,” Mr Wimmer said.
“This act is not terrorist in nature and belongs to the private sphere. There is no danger for the population.”
Moresnet-Chapelle is a hamlet in the village of Moresnet in Liege, Belgium, a few kilometers from the borders with Germany and the Netherlands.
