Russian authorities detained suspected Islamic State terrorist
Russian law enforcement bodies have detained a suspect involved in supporting the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the Russian Investigative Committee said on Wednesday.
An investigation established that the detainee, 26-year-old, has been actively involved in kidnapping, extortion and the illegal sale of firearms in the Russian Siberian city of Irkutsk, a committee statement said.
The detainee is also suspected of attempting to recruit others into the IS ranks, it said.
Authorities have found four machine guns and 10 pistols among varied ammunition, as well as a large amount of materials justifying terrorism and extremism at the suspect’s apartment, the committee said, adding that a relevant investigation is currently underway.
