Russian authorities detain two Islamic State fundraisers
Russian law enforcement bodies have detained two people suspected of raising funds for the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in the region of the country’s capital, the Russian Investigative Committee said Wednesday.
The detainees, both Russian citizens, raised at least 8 million rubles (125,000 U.S. dollars) through accomplices in Russia in 2014-2017 for the IS terrorists in Syria, the committee said in a statement.
Currently, investigators are establishing the role and specific actions committed by the suspects in the course of financing terrorism and are verifying their involvement in other crimes, it said.
Officers of the committee, the Federal Security Service, and the Interior Ministry have conducted a large-scale operation, including searches for terror-related individuals in residential areas in seven Russian regions.
