Rojava forces kill ISIS suspect in Raqqa
Kurdish counter-terrorism forces, from the Kurdistan Region and northeast Syria (Rojava), on Tuesday carried out a joint operation in the Syrian city of Raqqa and killed an Islamic State (ISIS) suspect, according to a statement.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Thursday said in a statement that its Anti-Terrorism Units (YAT), with the aerial support from the global coalition forces and “active” participation of the Sulaimani-based Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG), “conducted a security operation in the heart of Raqqa City, targeting the terrorist Ibrahim Al-Ali aka Abu Mujahid, the ISIS official of the Eastern region.”
The operation was carried out on Tuesday.
The US-backed Kurdish force added that “our forces successfully stormed the building where the terrorist was hiding. A clash erupted as he adamantly declined to heed the call for safe surrender, resulting in his neutralization.”
Various types of weapons, a laptop and documents were confiscated during the raid.
The SDF has carried out several other joint operations with the CTG, which is unofficially tied to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
The SDF fought the lion’s share of the battle against ISIS and territorially defeated the terror group in 2019 after the terror group swept through swathes of the country in 2014. The Kurdish force is in control of numerous detention facilities that house tens of thousands of veteran ISIS fighters.
