Politician’s Wife Killed in Al-Shabaab Missile Attack
Hindi Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kariuki Njagaa’s wife was on the morning of Tuesday, August 1, reported dead following a suspected Al Shabaab Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred in the Nyongoro area of Lamu County. The MCA was traveling with his family, when their vehicle came under attack.
Following the ambush, several of the MCA’s family members sustained injuries. The details of the attack and the condition of the injured were still under investigation by the time of publishing this article.
“Al-Shabāab al-Mujāhideen Terrorists attacked three civilians vehicles including one belonging to Hindi area MCA using RPGs & assault rifles,” read a report from Counter Terrorism & Security Intelligence.
Reports indicated that the MCA was shot in the leg, while his wife suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the attack. The assailants targeted their car, which was among several other vehicles attacked by the group.
As the attack was being staged, occupants of the different cars in the convoy sought safety in the nearby bush until security officers arrived at the scene.
The victims were promptly rushed to Witu Level 4 Hospital for treatment, while the deceased was transported to the morgue.
In response to the incident, security forces, including the Special Operations Group and forest rangers, promptly mobilised to counter the terror group.
Concurrently, a manhunt was launched by the police officers to apprehend the suspects who fled the scene.
Several vehicles plying the route were compelled to halt at the scene as the police gathered crucial evidence.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki confirmed the incident adding that an unknown number of people had gone missing. Kindiki revealed that at least 60 terrorists were at the scene.
“While a combined security operation of elite contingents of the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is currently underway, treatment of the injured, as well as the search and rescue of missing civilians, is ongoing,” Kindiki stated.
The Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) condemned the attack and called for a prompt response and investigations to apprehend the culprits.
“We strongly condemn this cowardly act of violence and extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. Such heinous acts targeting innocent civilians not only undermine the principles of peace and unity but also threaten the fabric of our society,”
