Border guards personnel killed and injured in bomb explosion west of Anbar
One of the border guards was killed, while four others were wounded in an explosion caused by the remnants of Islamic State, west of Anbar, a security source said on Thursday.
“A bomb from the remnants of Islamic State exploded today targeting a border guards patrol near al-Waleed border crossing, west of Anbar,” the source told AlSumaria News.
“The blast left one of the personnel killed and four others wounded, in addition to damages caused to the patrol,” the source, who asked to remain anonymous, added.
Security troops have control on the Iraqi borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, however, some of the landmines and explosives planted by IS target security patrols in west of Anbar.
According to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), 3298 civilians were killed and 4781 others were wounded in 2017, excluding Anbar civilian casualty figures for November and December, which are not available, the report added.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced, in December, full liberation of Iraqi lands, declaring end of war against IS members.
Thousands of IS militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.
