Four people sentenced to prison in Vienna 2020 terrorist attack
A court in Austria has sentenced four people to prison on Thursday for their involvement in the November 2020 bombing in the Austrian capital Vienna that killed four people and injured 23.
The court has ruled that they all had links to the perpetrator of the attack, a 20-year-old man of Macedonian origin who opened fire on a crowd. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State terrorist group.
The attacker, identified as Kujtim Fejzulai, had been firing for about nine minutes and was eventually shot dead by Austrian police. He was on parole after being arrested and convicted for alleged membership in a terrorist organization.
Now, the four convicted men have been charged with helping him carry out the attack. The court has imposed life sentences against two of them, while others have been sentenced to 19 and 20 years in prison.
The case provoked harsh criticism of the Interior Ministry for failing to monitor the attacker even after it had warned of the danger posed by his release.
The government, which admitted mistakes on the part of Austrian Intelligence in connection with the attack, tabled a new anti-terrorism law which sparked controversy as it included increased surveillance and introduced “religiously motivated” offenses.
