One killed, 2 children injured in Houthi shelling on Yemen’s Taiz

Houthi rebels launched Monday an attack on Yemen’s southwestern province of Taiz, killing at least one person and injuring two children, the state-run Saba news agency reported.

The report said the Houthis targeted the residential neighborhood of Rawdah with “indiscriminate shelling using several mortars,” killing one and injuring two children.

Taiz has been embroiled in Yemen’s civil war since the Houthis attempted to seize full control of the country in 2015. The rebels have surrounded Taiz but have not captured all its areas from the Yemeni government forces.

The Houthis frequently target Taiz with shelling and sniper fire, according to residents and officials.

The Houthi group has not commented on the attack.

Yemen’s civil war began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of the north. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to help restore the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The conflict has killed thousands of people and caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
