A Peshmerga commander told NRT on Sunday (December 19) Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked the Iraqi army late last night in the area of the Qarachokh Mountains southwest of Erbil and a soldier was injured in the clash.
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Military Commander in Makhmour Ghazi Faisal told NRT ISIS gunmen attacked at about midnight last night in the villages of Azikand and Bardi Spi in the vicinity of the Qarachokh Mountains near Makhmour.
The Iraqi army responded to the attack, a member of Iraqi forces was injured in the clash and afterwards the militants fled, according to Faisal.
Seven Peshmerga and three civilians were killed in an attack in the Qarachogh area of Makhmur on December 3.
In December, 2017, federal security forces, in cooperation with Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and aided by Coalition airstrikes, declared victory over ISIS. Since then, the militant group has resorted to guerrilla hit-and-run tactics, but remains a potent threat in some parts of the country.
