ISIS newsletter again claims Vegas attack saying that the shooter converted to Muslim 6 months ago
In the days since the horrific shooting in Las Vegas, everyone has responded in a different way. Everyday Americans have been mourning, legislators have pushed actions they believe might stop the next potential shooter, and law enforcement officers have focused on the investigation.
Investigators were able to gain access to the shooter’s properties within hours of the initial attack, and as they went through his belongings and his records, were able to slowly piece together a picture of who he was.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack — but so far, law enforcement officials have been unable to find any convincing link between 64-year-old Stephen Paddock and the radical militant Islamist group.
But Rukmini Callimachi, a correspondent for the New York Times covering ISIS, believes there might be a basis for the group’s initial claim — and she says it’s right there in the weekly newsletter.
Callimachi noted that, yes, ISIS has been known to exaggerate the numbers and brutality of their kills — but says it is important to remember that the underlying claim is, more often than not, correct.
