List of Nairobi churches and malls targeted by al Shabaab
Police officers in Nairobi have marked areas believed to be targeted by al-Shabaab militants for possible attacks this festive season.
In a letter seen by the Star, Makadara sub-county police commander Timon Odingo has called for increased surveillance in these high-target areas.
The attacks according to police are to disrupt the Christmas festivities.
Some of the areas stated include; the Presbyterian Guest House and Conference Centre in South C, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in South B, Nairobi West Mall, Capital Centre, Garden City and T-Mall.
“The group may also be targeting other guest houses and conference centres owned by churches as well as Christmas and New Year’s eve celebrations,” police said.
This comes barely four days after a father and his son were Sunday morning killed when suspected al-Shabaab militants attacked a vehicle between Jabibar and Bamboo in Mandera North.
The two were driving in a Landcruiser when the attack happened on the Rhamo-Elwak road, police said adding that three other passengers on board were Injured in the attack.
Locals said the gang was after the vehicle for use in Somalia where they are facing pressure from the local administration.
The three who were injured included National police reservists attached to Jabibar police post.
Witnesses said the gang opened fire on the speeding car after the driver refused to stop.
The area is near the Kenya-Somalia border and is facing constant attacks from terrorists.
