Morocco dismantles terrorist cell planning attacks
The intervention operations carried out by elements of the DGST special force, in coordination with the commissioners and officers of the BCIJ and in collaboration on the ground with elements of the air brigade and the Judicial Center of the Royal Gendarmerie, led to the arrest of four extremists, including three brothers, affiliated with the terrorist organization Daesh, aged 26, 29, 31 and 35 who worked in the Had Soualem region in the province of Berrechid,according to a BCIJ statement.
This security operation was carried out in two different locations, namely two houses located in the Al Omrane and Al Amal housing estates in the Al Wahda district of the Had Soualem region, with the participation of explosives detection technicians, members of the canine brigade which includes trained dogs specialized in the detection of explosives and explosive devices, as well as a Royal Gendarmerie helicopter that scanned the areas of intervention, with elite snipers from the DGST special force on board.
Searches carried out at the sites of the interventions led to the seizure of bladed weapons of different sizes, several bottles containing liquids and chemical powders, bags containing large quantities of chemical fertilizers, sulfur, coal dust and salts and suspicious substances, as well as electrical cables, welding tools and adhesive tapes that can be used in the preparation and manufacture of explosives and which were made available to forensic scientists and technicians to undergo the necessary technical expert examinations.
Intelligence service investigations into this case began some time ago after DGST services detected a video in which the detained individuals pledged “allegiance and loyalty” to the terrorist organization “Daesh,” while committing to imminent terrorist acts.
Search and geolocation procedures revealed that the suspects went to four drugstores in the Had Soualem region in a single day, where they were able to purchase chemicals used in the manufacture of explosives.
They then proceeded to store them in one of their homes and prepare to carry out experimental operations for the manufacture of explosive devices.
The same investigations revealed that two of the detained brothers made reconnaissance visits to separate locations at different times, during which they documented several potential targets for their terrorist plans with photos and video recordings.
Intelligence information, corroborated by investigative procedures, indicates that the suspects intended to perpetrate terrorist operations using explosive materials before joining the camps of the “Daesh” organization in the Sahel region.
The four detained defendants were taken into police custody as part of the judicial investigation carried out by the BCIJ under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office in charge of terrorism cases in order to elucidate all the possible ramifications of this cell with regional and international terrorist organizations, and to identify and interrogate all the elements of this terrorist cell.
