Moroccan forces foil nationwide ISIS-backed terror attack

Moroccan authorities on Wednesday foiled a high-risk terrorist plot targeting the country in a plot that was directly incited by a senior ISIS leader from the Sahel region of Africa, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance.

The coordinated operation, executed simultaneously in cities including Laâyoune, Casablanca, Fez, Taza, Tangier, Azemmour, Jerrada, Oulad Taima, and Tamsna near Rabat, led to the arrest of 12 extremists, aged between 18 and 40 who had pledged allegiance to ISIS and were involved in planning serious terrorist actions.

The operation carried out by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) based on precise intelligence from the Directorate-General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

Sniper teams were deployed at intervention sites, and explosive detection specialists, along with trained police dogs, were used to secure the areas and locate any dangerous materials.

House searches resulted in the discovery of improvised explosive devices, weapons, and chemicals.

Investigations have linked the cell to a prominent ISIS leader in the Sahel, responsible for financing and providing logistical support for the operation.

The authorities continue to investigate the suspects and their international connections.

This operation underscores the persistent terrorist threat from the Sahel region and Morocco’s ongoing commitment to counterterrorism efforts.
