Moroccan and Spanish authorities dismantle an ISIS terrorist cell
Morocco and Spain dismantled on Monday a terrorist cell linked to the so-called Islamic State, better known as ISIS, in both Tangier and Catalonia.
Morocco’s Ministry of Interior said in a communique that the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) had dismantled the three-member cell in conjunction with the Spanish security authorities. One member,s arrested in Tangier, will appear in court following the completion of an investigation by the public prosecutor. The arrest coincided with the arrest of two other suspects in Spain.
The ministry stated that preliminary investigations had revealed that the cell had close contacts with two fighters in Iraq and Syria, helping recruit and send volunteers to fight with ISIS, including the brother of one the detainees. The Spanish Ministry of Interior said that two arrested in Catalonia are Moroccans aged 21 and 32. They had been determined to join ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
The dismantling of this cell is part of a larger effort being undertaken by Moroccan security services to counter terrorism, particularly in cooperation with Spain.
Over the past few years, Morocco made many efforts to eradicate terrorism and thwart any potential serious threat exposed to destabilize the country.
In February, Mohamed Moufakir, Wali and Director General of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Moroccan authorities 168 terrorist cells since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Fifty of the 168 dismantled cells had had connection to foreign hotbeds of terrorism, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, and the Sahel.
