Place of Birth: Bangladesh;

Gender: Male;

Nationality: British;

General Info:
Mohammed Nahin Ahmed is a former postman who was born in Bangladesh (moved to the United Kingdom as a child) who travelled to Syria to join an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group and has been jailed for 17 years and eight months.

He was arrested on returning to the UK in January and pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in preparation of terrorism acts contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

While in Syria, he is believed to have spent eight months with the jihadist group al-Nusra Front.

His sentence, for engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts, was reduced on appeal in December 2015 to 15 years three months, with ten years in custody and a five-year licence period.

Mohammed Nahin Ahmed and Yusuf Zubair Sarwar, childhood friends from Birmingham, travelled to the war-torn country in May last year after contacting Islamist extremists.

Traces of military grade explosives were discovered on their clothing when stopped on Heathrow Airport and hundreds of photos of the pair in Syria were recovered from a camera. They included images of the pair aiming automatic weapons.

Specialists said the images showed they had been in and around Aleppo, the scene of ongoing fighting between Syrian government troops and rebels. Traces of “military-grade explosives”, including TNT and nitroglycerine were also found on the men’s clothes and trainers.

Previous online communications between the pair also discussed how Ahmed would leave and how he could not say he was going to jihad because he would “get arrested the next day”.

Over Skype, Ahmed talked to a Swedish national who was fighting with Katibat al-Muhajireen (KaM). He told the fighter: “I come to join KaM,” to which the Swede replies: “Inshallah (God willing)”.

Ahmed later asked a Danish Islamic extremist: “Would the brothers in Yemen accept me?”

Online conversations between Sarwar and Ahmed also revealed Ahmed’s plan to travel abroad to join the jihad. He tells Sarwar: “I cannot tell anyone I’m going to jihad. Lol. I’ll get arrested.”

The two men, both from Birmingham, admitted engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorism acts when they appeared at the Woolwich Crown Court.
