ISIS module case: Mumbai court sends accused to judicial custody
A special court in Mumbai on Monday sent two accused in an ISIS terror module case to judicial custody. The development came even as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sought their custody for ten more days.
Zubair Shaikh and Zulfikar Ali were among the four accused arrested earlier this month by the NIA in the ISIS module case. They were sent to judicial custody earlier on July 17, but on Friday, the NIA had sought their custody.
The central probe agency had argued that the accused had provided “fund and shelter” to two other accused, who were arrested by the Pune unit of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in another case.
The court had granted custody of the duo to NIA till July 31. However, when the two were produced in court on Monday, NIA’s plea to remand them in its custody for ten more days was rejected.
NIA said that there were some fresh revelations in the interrogation, and that the accused were using code words in their conversation with some witnesses and handlers.
However, lawyers representing the two opposed the same.
Advocate Zeeshan Khan, representing Shaikh, argued that no new grounds had been submitted to justify the request for further custody.
Advocate Tahira Shaikh, appearing for Ali, submitted that when NIA had sought the custody of the two accused, they had given specific reasons which included the decoding issue as well.
Shaikh specifically stated that the NIA was completely silent on what they had done in the last three days but was only repeating their ground for remand again.
