Shi’ite militias Hashd al-Shaabi are struggling to clear Hawija from ISIS terrorists

The Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi, after three months since the liberation of Hawija district in southwest Kirkuk province, is still struggling to completely clear the town from the remaining Islamic State (IS) jihadists and war remnants.

The group said on Wednesday it has launched a massive operation in Hawija to remove the IEDs and remaining explosives in the city.

Several dozens of bombs and unexploded mortars were destroyed the same day.

Hawija was announced fully liberated from IS last October, almost two months before Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the complete defeat of the jihadists in the whole country.

However, IS sleeper cells continue challenging Iraq’s security as they from time to time carry out offensives on military and civilian areas.
