Two Daesh Militants Killed in Northern Iraq

Two Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) militants were killed and an Iraqi soldier was injured during clashes with terrorists in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh on Sunday, according to an Iraqi provincial police source.

An operation began on Sunday to hunt down the militants in the Qara-Chokh Mountain region close to Makhmour, about 60 kilometers southeast of Mosul, the provincial capital of Nineveh, according to Major Saad al-Baiyati of the Nineveh police.

Al-Baiyati said the security operation to clear the Daesh stronghold in the mountainous region south of Mosul will continue.

Iraqi security forces have engaged in operations against militants in recent months to put a stop to their escalating activities.

Daesh began a terror campaign in Iraq in 2014, overrunning vast swathes in lightning attacks.

Iraq declared victory over terrorist group in December 2017 after a three-year counter-terrorism military campaign, in which the PMU, known in Arabic as Hashd al-Sha’abi, also played a major role.

However, Daesh’s remnants keep staging sporadic attacks across Iraq, attempting to regroup and unleash fresh violence in the Arab country.

The Takfiri terrorist group has managed to intensify its attacks in Iraq, particularly since January 2020, when the United States assassinated top Iranian anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and PMU’s deputy commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a drone strike near Baghdad International Airport.
