Kirkuk police arrests ISIS suspect allegedly involved in death of police officer: Source
Kirkuk police on Sunday arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State (ISIS), believed to be behind the recent killing of a police officer in the city, a security source said.
Unidentified assailants shot and killed a police officer, Shwana Tahir, in a Kirkuk bazaar on Thursday, injuring one of his colleagues and a woman.
Security forces blamed ISIS for the attack at the time, and the group claimed responsibility for the assault on Saturday.
A source from Kirkuk police, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Rudaw on Monday that they had arrested one of the members of the group who killed the police officer, adding that the suspected member of ISIS is neither of the two who appear on CCTV during the incident.
Amir Nuri, Kirkuk police spokesperson, described the incident at the time as a “terrorist” act. “This is considered a terrorist attack, because the assailant, without any reason or argument, comes from behind with his face covered in order not to be recognized, shoots him and then runs away.”
Security footage from the site showed two police officers walking around the bazaar at around 11:16 am before a masked man shoots one of them from behind and quickly fires at the other, standing a few steps away from his colleague. The murdered officer was a Kurdish civil police member.
