Kenya halts bus services in Mandera over Al-Shabaab attacks
Kenyan security authorities have ordered bus owners in Mandera, Northeastern Kenya, to halt transport services to and from the county due to increased insecurity blamed on the militant group Al-Shabaab.
An attack on a bus by suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen yesterday evening between Rhamu and Bambo area killed at least one person.
A police vehicle escorting the bus was also reportedly targeted as was another carrying medicines. Casualties were reported from both attacks.
The Al-Qaeda-linked group has stepped up its attacks in the region, targeting non-Somali Kenyans working in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties.
Many non-local Kenyan workers, especially teachers, have as a result left Northeastern Kenya en mass, crippling education and health sectors in an already underdeveloped region.
