Kashmir terror attack: CCTV clip shows terrorists firing for 7 minutes with M4 carbine, AK-47 before fleeing
Two terrorists, who opened fire on a camp sheltering construction workers in Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on October 20 leaving seven dead, have been captured in CCTV footage where they were seen armed with American-made M4 carbine assault rifle and an AK-47.
The CCTV footage released by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday showed the two armed terrorists spent around seven minutes at the workers’ camp in Gagangir area in Ganderbal before fleeing the spot.
As per officials, the footage suggests that the duo were aware of the topography of the area.
What CCTV footage showed?
The CCTV camera at the construction site captured the face of the attackers and they were barging into the camp wielding a rifle.
A report by Indian Express cited sources as saying that there was no CCTV camera installed at the place where the two terrorists first opened fire. “CCTV captured the area where they headed next — the two can be seen entering and opening fire. They also attacked the mess before coming out and firing on more workers,” a source said.
As per initial investigation, the terrorists had put a grenade inside a vehicle parked within the camp’s premises before shooting the driver.
“After recording the statements of the injured persons and a security guard who managed to escape, it came to light that initially, the workers thought that some people were bursting firecrackers. But within two-three minutes, they realised it was a terror attack,” the report quoted sources as saying.
What weapons were they carrying?
The Indian Express report mentioned sources further saying that the terrorists were armed with an M4 carbine assault rifle and an AK-47, and 37-40 used cartridges were recovered from the spot.
The duo also fired shots at every area where there was light since power at the camp was cut seconds before they went into spree.
The security agencies along with the local police are now interrogating villagers to find out details of the terrorists’ local handler, who helped them conduct a recce before the attack on Sunday (October 20) evening.
According to a report by The Hindu, security agencies suspect the attackers could be hiding in the flanks of the thick forest ranges adjacent to the attack site.
Terrorist attack in J&K’s Ganderbal district
On October 20, around 7:25 pm, when some employees gathered in the dining area for dinner, two armed terrorists barged in and began firing.
Seven people, including six non-local workers and a doctor from Kashmir’s Budgam, were killed in the attack. They were working for Uttar Pradesh-based infrastructure company APCO Infratech, which is constructing the Z-Morh tunnel on the Srinagar-Sonamarg highway.
The tunnel will make the Srinagar-Sonamarg road an all-weather road and after it becomes functional, Sonamarg will be an all-season tourist destination.
The camp, which the terrorists targetted on October 28, is situated just below an approach road to the tunnel, and is surrounded by barren mountains to one side and the Srinagar-Leh national highway on the other.
