Israeli army arrested Hamas lawmaker in West Bank
The Israeli army arrested on Thursday a member of the Palestinian legislative Council from Hamas in the West Bank, the nongovernmental organization Palestinian Prisoners Club (PPC) said.
The Hamas lawmaker, identified as Azzam Salhab, was arrested after breaking into his home in Hebron in the southern West Bank, according to a PPC press statement.
Salhab already spent several years in detention at various times in the past.
In an e-mailed statement, Hamas condemned Salhab’s arrest, saying “Israel seeks to impose its piracy through emptying the West Bank of its national symbols.”
“The Israeli policy cannot reduce the strength of the Palestinian people and our people will not allow the enemy to pass his plans,” the statement noted.
Israeli forces often launch overnight raids in the West Bank to arrest the Palestinians whom Israel accuse of carrying out activities and operations against the country.
