Mass grave of Islamic State terrorist group members bodies found in Diyala
A mass grave of Islamic State militants’ bodies was found on Sunday in Diyala, the police command announced.
In a statement, the command said security troops seized a mass grave of IS members’ bodies in Basateen al-Mekheisa region. It added that six grave of IS members were found during an operation that destroyed a rest house for the group, which included weapons and explosives.
Last week, Sadeq al-Husseini, head of the security committee of Diyala provincial council, said in remarks that an airstrike targeted a rest house near Hamreen lake, leaving a senior leader and two companions killed.
Thousands of IS militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced, in December, full liberation of Iraqi lands, declaring end of war against IS members. However, Observers warn that some IS sleeper cells might remain in the country and pose a future security threat.
Nearly five million people have been displaced since the launch of the offensives to recapture occupied cities.
