Islamic State terrorists seized key Mozambique port city after six-day battle
Islamic State militants have overrun government forces and their South African mercenary allies to capture a strategic city in Mozambique.
Dozens of soldiers were killed during nearly a week of intense fighting for control of Mocimboa da Praia, a northern port 50 miles from Africa’s biggest gas drilling development that has been backed by a £1 billion loan from Britain.
The terrorist group posted images of dead troops and weapons seized by its fighters, who began their land and sea assault on August 5 against the city of 30,000 people who had mostly fled the violence.
Navy forces defended the port until Tuesday when they ran out of ammunition, according to Zitamar news website.
