The Islamic State terrorist group is world’s common problem
The Islamic State is not eradicated, and it remains the common problem of the world, said Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
The Kurdish leader made the remarks during an interview with an Italian TV channel broadcasted on Tuesday, during which he also called on the US-led Coalition to prolong its assistance to Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces so that they would continue their battle against the militant group in the region.
PM Barzani, in the meantime, reminded that the Kurdistan Region views Italy as a close friend, thanking the country as well Pope Francis for their continuous support to the Kurdistan Region.
During the interview, PM Barzani pointed out that the Kurdistan Region has been the safe haven for nearly 1.8 million IDPs and Syrian refugees since 2014, when the IS group attacked Iraq and overran a vast area in the country.
Kurdistan Region has played a key role in the global coalition battling the Islamic State. Nearly 2,000 Peshmerga fighters lost their lives in the war and 10,000 more were injured.
