Islamic State terrorist group threatens to terrorise South Africa
South Africa risks becoming Isis’s next target if it deploys troops to fight jihadists in neighbouring Mozambique, the Islamist group has warned.
President Ramaphosa faces pressure to respond to an escalation in attacks by militants near the site of Africa’s biggest energy project. The British government announced last week that it would back the development of vast natural gas fields off the coast of Mozambique with a £1 billion loan guarantee.
For several years, local Islamist fighters have waged an insurgency in Mozambique’s northernmost province, Cabo Delgado, which is home to the $60 billion gas development.
